Article analysis

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

The key entry points for the audience on this article would be the main image and the introductory paragraph. The main image in this first thing the readers eyes will see. It shows us what this article section will be based on and gives the reader an idea before they start reading.

Another key point would be the introductory paragraph. It sets and tells us a bit about what is going on at the time. By telling us straight away it engages the audience from the start. It shows us that this article is about a very famous Filipino woman who has fans that will wait hours just to see her.

The main image has a very neutral colour palette. All of them are dressed in either dark or neutral suits/dresses. The outfits are very nice on the eye for the readers, they all look very sophisticated and almost powerful. All the spotlight is on them as they are the most important people in the room and that is noticeable even by their facial expressions. The male gaze could also be used with this because of the way they people in the image are placed. The 3 men are placed to the right side of the main image and aren't the 'main focus of attention'. In contrast to this the woman is basically the main character in this photo. The lighting is shining straight on this woman and all the cameras are pointed towards her. Esquire could have put any of the male stars front and centre but they chose to put Maine Mendoza on because of two reasons. One, she is the most recognizable out of the lot, she will bring even more interaction due to her large number of following, (nearly 4 million followers on Instagram.) Secondly, she appeals more to the male gaze. Esquire is a predominantly male magazine, so having a very pretty actress on the main image will appeal to this audience rather than if a man was on it.

This article uses serif as its font throughout the whole of it. This type of font makes the article look a lot more formal and tidy. You would associate a font like this with somebody who has their life sorted out, quite well off and usually a male.

The use of negative space in this article is used very well to separate two different sets of images. It contrasts between letting the main character, Maine Mendoza, not have all the spotlight anymore as it has 3 separate boxes going down off the other men in the photo. Their faces finally get to be the centre of attention after people have finished looking at the main image. The magazine have found a way for them all to be shown in equal lights.

The key entry points of this article would be the main image. It features Tom Hardy, with his top off, posing for the the photo. Of course, they have used this type of image to appeal to audience. Tom Hardy is one of the most successful British actors of the last couple years, the men who read this magazine will either want to aspire to be like him in the future or can relate to him in someway. As well as appealing to the male readers this also relates to the female ones too. Hardy is a very attractive person and the magazine are using the female gaze as well to appeal to the audience. He didn't have to be shirtless but they did it to show off his abs and tattoos and even himself, if you looked up to someone, related to them or even fancied them I'm sure these people would want to read the article even more so because of these reasons. Another key entry point would be the opening paragraph. It talks about Hardy's role in Revenant with Leonardo DiCaprio and how they have a wager going on about a tattoo. It straight drags the reader in as they want to know even more about why or how this came about, using two big name movie stars will definitely appeal to the audience.

This image also has a pull quote on it. It features Hardy saying 'I've also felt like something of a naughty boy'. Again this is probably the most intriguing and 'gossipy' part of the whole interview. It leaves the readers minds running with thoughts and feelings towards this. It especially appeals to those who fancy him in particular because the words 'bad boy' can connate to many things.

The layout of this article is pretty standard. Main image on the right and main text on the left. First thig you'll see when you flick open the page will be that image and if people like what they see their eyes will turn tot eh left of the page where the article is. Esquire are using his image to get people to read the article. I doubt anybody would read this if there wasn't any sort of image on the page, it would look bland and boring and just wouldn't appeal to the eyes.

Also the font used for this article is serif again. A very common theme in all Esquire pieces. They like to keep the tradition inside the magazine by staying very classic and sophisticated. This isn't for children or teens to read it's for adults who can relate to these successful people and if not relating to them, aspiring to get to that level one day.

Although, serif fonts only seem to be used for the articles. The pull quote and title are in a very bold sans serif font. It's very eye catching, it grabs the attention and that's just what the editors want.
